Round 7 of the AFL was exciting with a few close matches that showed what a great sport the AFL is.

There is still scope for improvement of the game with the Giants and Dockers failing to put up a fight. The round was highlighted by the tough and tight tussle between the Kangaroos and Swans. Who would have thought that The Kangaroos could win?

The biggest winners, in my opinion, were the Lions, regardless of not winning the match they took a step forward in their development with an outstanding performance against the Magpies.

Cats vs Giants
The Cats have a lot depth, while the Giants are lacking it. What promised to be an exciting, close contest, turned out to be a one-sided one in favour of the Cats.

Bulldogs vs Suns
The Suns have improved despite not winning the match. Gold Coast are a better, more competitive team under the tuteledge of Stuart Dew.

Bombers vs Hawks
The Bombers faded away yet again! Essendon have the cattle on the magnet board, but they can’t produce when it matters.

Eagles vs Power
The Eagles are the real deal. Despite suffering injuries to Lewis Jetta, Dom Sheed and Luke Shuey, West Coast stood up in a tough test against the Power.

Swans vs Kangaroos
The AFL needs more close, exciting games like this one. This was probably the best contest this season, with both teams not giving an inch. The game was marred by a goal to the Kangaroos that appeared to have been touched and thus should have resulted in a point, which would have led to the Swans winning the contest.

Crows vs Blues
The game is too long, it shows up underperforming teams like the Blues. This game was one-sided in the second half, which shows that the game needs to be shortened in order to prevent blowouts from occurring.

Tigers vs Dockers
The Dockers displayed a lack of fight. Fremantle were so bad that it was difficult to make a judgement on the Tigers. The Dockers were blown away, offering little resistance.

Saints vs Demons
The Demons are in the running for a top-eight finish, while the Saints continue to struggle
The game was pretty much one-way traffic for the whole match.

Lions vs Magpies
The Lions were unlucky not to get their first win of the season. Brisbane put up a good fight, giving the Magpies a run for their money.

Top five coaches of Round 7
1. Chris Fagan (Lions): Fagan has changed the culture at the Lions with the recruitment of Luke Hodge, who is like an on-field coach.

2. Brad Scott (Kangaroos): It was a remarkable coaching effort by Scott, who made three changes at the selection table, even choosing to ‘manage’ key forward Jarrad Waite.

3. Chris Scott (Cats): The Cats controlled the game from start to finish against one of the premiership favourites in the Giants.

4. Adam Simpson (Eagles): The Eagles were without three of their starting midfielders with Dom Sheed and Lewis Jetta injured and Luke Shuey suffering a hamstring injury early in the game. Jack Redden and Chris Masten have been revelations this season, with their respective careers hanging in the balance at the end of 2017.

5. Damien Hardwick (Tigers): Apart from a poor third quarter when they let the Dockers fight their way back into the game, the Tigers were outstanding; they showed they have depth, going into the game without key players Trent Cotchin and Shaun Grigg.
