Sunwolves snatch rugby win over Stormers

By News / Wire

Five-eighth Hayden Parker has nailed a drop goal almost four minutes after the siren to give the Sunwolves a thrilling 26-23 Super Rugby win over South Africa’s Stormers in Hong Kong.

The result gives the Japanese outfit back-to-back victories for the first time, with Super Rugby making its Hong Kong debut on Saturday at Mong Kok Stadium thriller.

The Sunwolves grabbed their first win of the season with a 63-28 thrashing of the Queensland Reds last weekend at home in Tokyo but this was a much tighter affair against the Cape Town-based Stormers.

Two tries from livewire winger Dillyn Leyds and an intercept five-pointer from JJ Engelbrecht helped the South Africans to a 17-10 halftime lead. Parker had scored all his side’s points through a converted try and a penalty.

Sunwolves lock Grant Hattingh crossed at the end of a sweeping move to lock up the scores after the break. Parker added his second penalty to put his side 20-17 ahead with 17 minutes to play.

Stormers fullback SP Marais landed two huge penalties, the second from five metres inside his own half, to edge the visitors back ahead.

However, the unerring Parker nailed his third three-pointer to set up the dramatic finale.

Thanks for the clips Neutral! The excitement from the Japanese commentary is awesome, and what a finish from the ex Otago lad, H Parker, with the penalty, and the chip kick to the wing, and the finishing drop goal!
