Chelsea will be out to right the wrongs from 12 months ago when they take on an out-of-sorts Manchester United. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of the FA Cup final from 2:15am (AEST).
Chelsea were heartbroken in last year’s final, being beaten by Arsenal 2-1. After conceding an early goal, they scored in the 76th minute through Diego Costa, only to let in another goal three minutes later, with the men in blue unable to hit back.
Neither team brings great form in, but in a match where so often neither team wants to make a mistake for fear of then having the other team park the bus, form can almost be tossed out the window.
Chelsea closed their season with a draw against Huddersfield and a 3-0 loss to Newcastle, while the Red Devils lost to Brighton, drew with West Ham and clinched a narrow 1-0 win over Watford in their final match.
The key difference statistically between the sides was United’s defence They had the second-best record in the EPL, conceding just 28 goals across the course of the season, compared to 27 of Manchester City and 38 of Chelsea.
If anything, it just shows Antonio Conte’s side will need to tighten up at the back, with United also showing their ability to control matches once they get in front, like they did in a 2-0 win over Arsenal at the end of April or in their victory over Manchester City earlier in the month.
For Chelsea to pick up the win, it seems as if they must score first, but a lot of that will come down to the ability of Eden Hazard to find space and then have enough control to get past David de Gea, who had 18 clean sheets this year.
Romelu Lukaku, who led all scoring for Jose Mourinho’s men this season, will be the key if the Red Devils are to get over the top before extra time.
The sides have met twice before in FA Cup finals, with United winning 4-0 in 1994 and Chelsea taking a 1-0 extra time win in 2007 – back when Mourinho was managing them.
Prediction
With both teams defending well throughout the year, it’s hard to see where a goal comes from in a pressurised situation like this. Don’t be surprised if there is extra time, but I’ll take United to raise their 13th FA Cup.
United 1 – Chelsea 0.
