A new NRL tipping strategy (and it's the oldest trick in the book)

I’d like to think I know my NRL – that, in any given round, I can pick more winners than losers. However, things haven’t worked that way over the last few weeks.

For my fellow struggling tipsters, it may be time to stop checking out team and injury lists, head-to-head records and such. It’s time for an alternative.

When my kids were young, they used to pick by team names, a kind of battle of the mascots. So, for this week at least, I am going to give it a crack.

Broncos versus Eels
In the Eels’ natural habitat, this would be close to even money. However the Broncos are playing at home and the Eels aren’t much good on dry ground. Broncos in a canter.

Raiders versus Sea Eagles
This one’s a little more difficult. Vikings spent plenty of time at sea so, without any historical evidence, we will assume they have come across Sea Eagles on many occasions – and probably eaten them. Raiders in a tight one.

Cowboys versus Storm
Complete no-brainer. Cows may get scared in a storm but Cowboys can’t afford to. North Queensland will win.

Roosters versus Titans
The Roosters are playing at home but a chicken coop holds little fear for Titans. Titans will enjoy a finger-lickin’ good chicken dinner on late Saturday afternoon.

Warriors versus Rabbits
This promises to be a cliffhanger. Second only to the possum, rabbits are everywhere in New Zealand – so much so that the government recently announced they will introduce a disease to try and wipe them out. Surely, that’s a sign. Warriors to win but only after the Rabbits get a lead early.

Panthers versus Dragons
Following this strategy, the Dragons are quite hard to tip against. Perhaps the Knights could get them, however a fire-breathing Dragon beats a cat any day of the week. Dragons will burn the Panthers.

Knights versus Sharks
Another match-up where home ground is important. The Sharks would eat the Knights playing in their habitat, but aren’t quite as dangerous playing in Newcastle. Sure, they might flap around a bit and show their teeth, but if the Knights stick to the edges, they will be fine. Knights to beat the tiring Sharks.

Tigers versus Bulldogs
The round finishes with an easy one. The Tigers will be way too good for the Bulldogs, especially in the jungle.

So, there you have it: Broncos, Raiders, Cowboys, Titans, Warriors, Dragons, Knights, Tigers.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to change at least three of those tips but I need to remain strong. I wouldn’t suggest that you do the same in case I cop any flak for ridiculous tipping.

However, I will check back in next week and see how this new strategy performs. Happy tipping!
