Will Power has filled the one major hole in his IndyCar resume by winning the Indianapolis 500 and becoming the first Australian to do so.
The 37-year-old from Toowoomba is as well known as anyone on the American motorsport circuit and is hoping his latest triumph might turn a few heads Down Under.
“Unbelievable to be the first Australian to win the 500; maybe they will recognise me down there now,” smiled Power.
“I don’t think people know who I am down there.”
An IndyCar series champion and four time runner-up, Power delivered a cool, calculated drive on a sizzling hot day in Indianapolis to give owner Roger Penske his 17th Indy 500 success.
While Power was hoping for some well-earned recognition for being the first Australian to reach Victory Lane at Indy 500, there was also the potential for it be overshadowed by Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo.
The West Australian broke through for his first victory at arguably motorsport’s other most prestigious race: the Monaco grand prix.
Ricciardo is the third Australian to win an F1 race around the streets of Monaco, joining Jack Brabham won won in 1959 and Mark Webber who did so in 2010 and 2012.
But Power’s win is a first for an Aussie, as he steered well clear of trouble through seven cautions and then pounced when he had his chance in the final laps.
“Can’t believe I came all the way from Toowoomba to be a professional driver and I never expected to be here,” screamed Power. “I had a great month. I just can’t believe it.
“I was wondering if I would ever win it.
“My career, I’ve had so many wins, so many poles but everyone always talks about the 500 and I just couldn’t imagine winning a race in front of a crowd like this.”
