A monster ten-race card has been assembled for Wangaratta on Monday, while Western Australia racing makes a rare appearance at the start of the week at Northam. Here are my five plays across the programs.

Bet 1: win – Wangaratta Race 1, number three: Critical Reaction
This filly will take some beating. She came through the Woodlands during the Scone Carnival where she did too much work in the run behind a pretty good one, I suspect in Pretty In Pink. There’s a massive drop in depth here and looks to map ideally. A tricky maiden, but I think she’s the way to go.

Bet 2: win – Wangaratta Race 4, number five: Legale
Another one for the Hayes/Dabernig team, this one a son of Nicconi. He got a definite pass mark from me on debut at Sandown when placing behind the above-average Duality, who has since placed behind a potential star in Fifty Stars. He looks to have found a really good maiden to get the win on the board, so I’m happy to be with him.

Bet 3: win – Wangaratta Race 7, number two: Colombia
Handy gelding, this. Ciaron Maher trains this three-year-old, who is resuming. Spring and summer as a whole were pretty good. He won a couple of races and eventually measured up okay in town. He has looked good at the Caulfield jump outs, goes well fresh and looks to get a sweet run from the draw. Definite chance.

Bet 4: win – Northam Race 6, number eight: Regal Moon
Pike/Williams to the fore here, I think. This mare hasn’t raced for nearly a month since resuming over 1200 metres at Ascot and worked home quite well, I thought, behind an above-average filly in Necklet. There looks to be a bit of depth to this race, namely Great Again, but she has the fitness edge over that horse.

Bet 5: win – Northam Race 7, number six: Red Army
With normal luck this gelding should bolt in. He resumed over 1200 metres at Ascot, and I thought he did a really good job in defeat, doing work in the run but kept finding the line to run a close up third to Guns of Navarone. He bolted in at his lone second-up run and Pike is on. He ticks the boxes required for me to get the job done.
