Match result:

France have finished their world cup preparations with a somewhat underwhelming 1-all draw with an inspired and youthful team USA.

France had the better of their match in Lyon, finishing with upwards of 20 shots on goal. However, a late first-half strike to the US sent a shiver through the French team, as they spent the rest of the game chasing a result.

Kylian Mbappe would score late for the home side, and while they chased the winner, late saves by USA keeper Steffen would ultimately deny the French a morale-boosting win going into their first game against Australian next weekend.

A head injury to Olivier Giroud will also cause head coach Didier Deschamps some concerns. However, tonight, while the story was supposed to be about the home farewell to the French, it is all about the babes of the US, and a bright future for their international team.

In what is a great opportunity for the Socceroos to have a last up look at one of their World Cup group opponents before the two sides meet in a week, France play the USA in Lyon, in the lead up to the FIFA World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5am (AEST).

France are building up nicely for the premier global sporting tournament, and being one of the favourites to take the ultimate prize, they will be looking to use this match to lock down starting positions, build key positions, and brush away any cobwebs.

I think France have something to prove. Yes, they are world cup winners, so the opinion of one man in eastern Australia is not going to have Didier Deschamps losing sleep at night, but to be sure, France perform when the conditions suit.

They won the world cup at home, won Euro 2000 with a golden generation of players, and while they made the Euro final at home, and made another world cup final again in Europe, the question is can France perform when the tournament is not catered to make them prosper?

France are on the cusp of another golden generation, particularly when you think about the players who are not at the world cup: Benzema, Lacazette, Martial. Those quality players were considered excess to requirements. Astonishing.

So expect the likes of Pogba, Griezmann, Lemar, Mbappe, Dembele (I could go on) to hit their straps in the first half, and ease off in the second half, in preparation for Australia.

As for the USA? They really should be in the World Cup, and it should be a national embarrassment that they are not. While it is unlikely that the USA will be in competitive mode here, they are coming off a hard-fought loss to the Republic of Ireland, themselves in re-build mode.

The USA should be thinking about the next major continental and world tournaments, so taking it to a world cup favourite here would be a great tonic to take into the next phase of their own generational re-build.

Keep an eye on Bobby Wood to follow on from his last start goal, and I would not mind seeing last match debutant Tim Parker get a bit more game-time.

Prediction
France should get the job done here, but I would not expect it to be a clinic or any type of blow out. France have bigger fish to fry, and will instead want to be mindful of building up their team, while avoiding a morale-sapping loss. USA shouldn’t have the firepower to trouble Les Bleus.

France 2 – USA 0.
