There are several meetings to be conducted on Thursday across Australia, with some nice types engaged. Here are my five plays across the afternoon.

Bet 1: Win – Gosford Race 3, number six: Diamond Star Halo
The bludger of a race, but I think she is the one with upside whereas the rest have reached their limit. She toughed it out pretty well a couple of weeks back at Wyong behind Only Tiger, who won on Wednesday at Warwick Farm to frank the form. Think she can roll forward, lead and take some beating. Happy to take $3.30.

Bet 2: Win – Gosford Race 5, number three: Spencer
He’s the really interesting one. Early market support says yes, he’s ready to go, but I’m just slightly concerned he could drift come post time. I’ll take the gamble he’s ready to go because the trials leading in have been outstanding and the second trial has been franked with Sparkly Star bolting up on Wednesday at Warwick Farm. If he runs up to the trials, he goes awfully close. At $4.20 at the moment, I’d say take the tote.

Bet 3: Win – Sale Race 1, number 2: Charcol
If he jumps cleanly, he wins. There is a real question mark on these and where they are at. I think he’s the one with upside and from what I’ve seen at the trials, he looks capable of making it over the sticks. At $4.20, he looks like a really good bet. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts favourite.

Bet 4: Win – Sale Race 7, number five: My Unicorn
Keep in mind she is an emergency for a race in Adelaide on Saturday, but if she runs here, she should be winning. She had a really good run on the bog at the Bool last time out when pipped late by a well-backed runner. Firmer footing should help her cause and Melham does seem to get on really well with the Gelagotis runners. Odds of $2.50 are acceptable.

Bet 5: Win – Coffs Harbour Race 4, number 4: Art Attack
Jenny Graham has this bloke absolutely flying at the moment. Lumped the big weight last time out at Grafton and he just proved too good for them, slogging it out best. He gets really good weight relief this time around, and I think this track and distance will be ideal for his racing pattern. It’ll give him a better chance to wind up with momentum.
