Ipswich will host their biggest race day of the year this Saturday, while the course proper at Morphettville will host its first meeting since the carnival. Here are my five plays across the afternoon.
Bet 1: Each-way – Ipswich Race 4, number seven: I Feel Good
At $26-plus I can make a case for this bloke each way. His overall form the last couple of months has been excellent, with a few wins on the board. Forget his run on Sunday at the Sunny Coast. Wet track, back in trip, slow tempo – nah. Should get the opposite of former and latter here and at around $26-plus, I can entertain him each way.
Bet 2: Each-way – Ipswich Race 8, number two: Religify
He’s a tough bugger and I reckon that quality might get him home here. He has been an iron horse for Chris Waller for a number of years now. He hasn’t raced since the Crystal Mile on Cox Plate Day when he ran a gutsy second to Lucky Hussler after doing a power of work in front. A very good fresh horse, and he has looked the part in a couple of trials in Sydney.
Bet 3: Win – Ipswich Race 6, number two: Plucky Girl
The price is gone thanks to Platinum Angel coming out, but she’s the one to beat. Toby Edmonds has really figured out this mare. Keep her fresh, keep her to 1400 metres and get her on firm tracks, and hopefully the last bit is true for this Saturday. She hasn’t raced since the Tamworth Cup where she was gifted a soft lead and she bolted up. She won’t get it as easy this time, but her race pattern is very likeable.
Bet 4: Win – Morphettville Race 1, number two: Thorondor
I’m wary of Crockett, but if he’s in need of the run, Thorondor should bolt in. I’m not sure what he beat on debut a few weeks ago on the Parks track in Adelaide, but the way in which he did it was very impressive and he won doing plenty wrong late, with the margin flattering his rivals. In saying that, the depth here doesn’t look strong so happy to be with him and black figures are fine.
Bet 5: Win – Morphettville Race 6, number seven: Air Guitar
I think this bloke could potentially start at around $2.50. Darren Weir trains this three-year-old, who was backed off the map when debuting over the 1000 metres at Warracknabeal and despite sitting three and four wide no cover for the trip, he savaged the line late to get the win. Bit to like about him and I think he can go close to beating these. Happy to be on at $3.70.
