The midpoint of the CS:GO tournament was surpassed in the Gfinity Elite Series this afternoon, with Week 3’s CS:GO clashes throwing up plenty of surprises. Here’s how the day went down.
The day started off with the undefeated Perth Ground Zero having their streak sensationally broken by a rejuvenated Sydney Chiefs outfit.
The second match saw Brisbane Deceptors improve, but still fall short of a first win as they were downed by Melbourne Avant, before the Sydney Roar fell behind the pack following a thrilling loss to Melbourne Order – who join a four-way tie atop the ladder.
In our preview article yesterday, Stirling Coates gave the edge to Perth in the first match, predicted an easy win for Avant over Brisbane and gave a slight edge to Sydney Roar in their match of the day with Order.
We may have gone one-of-three, but the day was all the more entertaining for it.

7:20pm: Unbelievable! Sydney Roar gift Melbourne Order matchpoint after neglecting to buy a bomb defusal kit in that 28th round. They won the personnel battle, but wizard couldn’t defuse the bomb in time and Melbourne were able to win a round they had absolutely no right to.
With the wind out of Sydney’s sails, Melbourne are able to wrap it up in the next round and claim an incredible 16-13 victory!
Amazing round from Melbourne @ORDER_army's @soniccsau who times his plays to keep his club in the lead in this match!https://t.co/Q0T5jZ9Vih pic.twitter.com/qogmpau9kq

7:10pm: Sydney continuing to Roar back in the second half! They take another four out of five – giving them eight wins from ten rounds this half – and Melbourne’s 11-4 lead is suddenly very precarious at 13-12.

7:05pm: Sydney Roar have started the second half the stronger of the two sides, claiming four of the first five rounds to peg it back to 12-8 in Melbourne’s favour with ten to go.
With the pressure on @SYDRoarSports are pushing hard to close the game on Melbourne. @wizardcsgo making the moves to close out rounds but will it be enough?https://t.co/Q0T5jZ9Vih pic.twitter.com/dLdttCOpMs

6:55pm: It’s all Melbourne Order here as the teams switch sides. They’ve won seven rounds in a row and take a commanding 11-4 lead at half time.
6:45pm: Sydney Roar were able to get themselves back on level terms, but a downright outrageous effort by RaZ with the Desert Eagles helps the Order cut that run short and go on to lead 6-4 with ten rounds played.
Pistols? ORDER? OP! @RaZ_CS_ deagle shots putting the pressure on as Melbourne @ORDER_army pull ahead of Sydney Roar with a incredible ecohttps://t.co/Q0T5jZ9Vih pic.twitter.com/wpEEzSMwCU

A 1 v 5 usually has a typical outcome but not with @mizuCSGO from Melbourne @ORDER_army!https://t.co/Q0T5jZ9Vih pic.twitter.com/BUMcO4HH9X

6:35pm: It’s been a dominant start thus far from Melbourne Order. They look more organised and cohesive as a unit and took the first four rounds in decisive fashion – although the Roar have got themselves on the board.
6:20pm: The captains have just taken to the stage here at the arena, with Havoc of the Roar and Sonic of Melbourne Order butting heads before the final match of the day begins.

Sydney Roar have made one change for this one, with iNsanity returning from his week off at the expense of infrequent. Cache will the map we head to for this one.
6:00pm: And that is it! Melbourne Avant hold off a very spirited Brisbane Deceptors side who probably played their best match of the season.
In the end, Avant claim a 16-11 win which, coupled with Perth’s loss earlier, puts them in a three-way tie atop the ladder.
There was some impressive comebacks from the @BNEDeceptors but ultimately it was Melbourne @AvantGaming who locked up the match 16 – 11

Next up, a fourth team will join that logjam as Sydney Roar clash with Melbourne Order in the match of the day.
5:55pm: We’ve got a game here ladies and gents! Avant, once again, threatening to run away with the match after they got out to a 14-9 win, but two straight wins to Brisbane – courtesy of a thrilling triple frag by Artemis – sees the Deceptors peg it back to 14-11 with five rounds to go!
5:45pm: Brisbane started the second half in super fashion, winning four straight, before an ace by danz – just the second from anybody this season – allows Melbourne Avant to claim a crucial win and lead again 11-9.
The rounds are still close as MEL @AvantGaming lead @BNEDeceptors 11 – 9 but with @DANZ4L wiping out the QLDers the pressure is on!
Will this go right to the edge?https://t.co/Q0T5jZ9Vih pic.twitter.com/wsSOiGq5o2

5:35pm: Melbourne Avant snuff out a brief Brisbane rally, with four rounds in a row helping them claim a strong 10-5 lead at the half time break.
That said, Overpass is a notoriously CT-skewed map so the Deceptors are definitely still in the match despite the five-round deficit.
But Brisbane isn't going to be pushed out of this match with @fullsendJD returning the favour on the Melbourne club with a beautiful 4k to win the round! https://t.co/Q0T5jZ9Vih pic.twitter.com/OyNITFqKIX

5:25pm: Avant threatened to break the game open, going on a six-round winning streak, but Brisbane snapped that run at an important moment to peg it back to 6-4 after ten.
We're back into the game for Match 2 @BNEDeceptors 3 vs 5 MEL @AvantGaming
It's going to be an uphill fight for the QLD team but they're keeping on the heels of Avant with some clean shots coming through like this neat clip from @YetiBaconhttps://t.co/Q0T5jZ9Vih pic.twitter.com/dTZMu00uHi— Gfinity Australia (@GfinityAU) June 16, 2018
5:05pm: Brisbane got off to a flying start with three straight rounds but, while their skills look on so far, their decision making isn’t quite there. A poor push in round four lets Avant get one back, before they take another to make it 3-2 Deceptors after five.
4:50pm: We’re headed to Overpass for this one and Brisbane will play on the somewhat unfavoured T-side first.
4:45pm: Brisbane showing off a new face in their line-up today, with Artemis coming in for konii.
They are the only two female players we’ve seen on the Gfinity stage so far.
4:40pm: Game 2 is set to begin very shortly, with the winless Brisbane Deceptors having a crack at Melbourne Avant.
Analyst Sean Coleman has given Avant the edge.

4:30pm: How about that for an upset? The Sydney Chiefs – who lost their first match of the season 16-2 – have knocked off the previously-undefeated Perth Ground Zero 16-12, despite trailing 10-5 at half-time.
Their map differential is still poor (34-35), but if they can keep this form up they’ll be a tough team to face in the finals.
All good things must come to an end and it's @SydneyChiefs who live up to their word to put Perth @GroundZeroOCE's win streak into the dirt, taking the win 16 – 12! pic.twitter.com/DwRW5ijy5s

4:10pm: Sydney Chiefs have come out of the break breathing fire! They’ve levelled the series at 10-10 to set up an intriguing final third of this match with Ground Zero.
4:00pm: It’s so far so good for Ground Zero. They’ve been challenged by their rejuvenated opponents, but take a strong 10-5 lead into the half time break.
Some closely contested rounds in the first but it's @GroundZeroOCE who lead 10 – 5 @SydneyChiefs with a clean triple-kill from @officialkaotik to wrap out the half.

3:30pm: Can Perth make it three-from-three today? Their coach certainly says so.
