Ugh. The bye rounds. Annoying. Still, plenty of intriguing results. Let’s get into some good ol’ Monday morning rankings.

1.Richmond
Last week: 2

Very good win. Produced, collectively with their opposition, some of the best football of the year for three quarters. The fourth? Richmond did as they pleased, and kept their ‘G streak alive. Doesn’t change my opinion of them elsewhere (read: last’s week’s result).

2.West Coast
Last week: 1

Anyone who says the Eagles’ aren’t contenders after Friday’s loss is simply beyond reasoning with. They’re still a helluva force – but they better hope they don’t end up meeting Sydney in the finals, either in NSW or WA.

3.Sydney Swans
Last week: 4

They came, they conquered. I hate affixing this label – but they’re genuine premiership contenders. Being the only team to defeat the very good Eagles is also something to be impressed by.

4.Collingwood
Last week: 3

Had the bye.

5.Geelong
Last week: 5

Can’t begrudge them for their first three terms – they were sensational, in a sensational game. That last quarter though… they’ll be watching that a fair few times at the club this week you’d think.

6.Melbourne
Last week: 6

Had the bye. Much to ponder this week, between their loss to the Pies and their upcoming (rare) Friday night game in Adelaide. We’ll learn plenty when they go against Port.

7.Port Adelaide
Last week: 9

Huh. They’re quietly going along alright. The win over the Bulldogs was as regulation a win as you’ll see. Big, potentially tasty, clash against the Dees next week.

8.Hawthorn
Last week: 10

Weathered a competitive first half, dominated the match after the long break. They were always going to win that game from then, particularly because the Crows scored as many goals in the second half as the Socceroos did in Kazan: one.

9.North Melbourne
Last week: 7

Had the bye. Bulldogs clash next week suddenly became easier, given that team’s injuries.

10.GWS Giants
Last week: 9

Had the bye. For mine, the Giants are the perfect ‘barrier’ between the final contenders and everyone else.

11.Fremantle
Last week: 13

In an ideal world, Freo win that game by 100+. Alas, they’re a young team with so, so much more room for improvement. Brissy at Optus next week. Three in a row? Stuff hesitancy – If Fremantle are legitimate, they’ll smash the Lions.

12.Essendon
Last week: 11

Had the bye.

13.Adelaide
Last week: 12

Watch the Socceroos or blog the Crows? I chose the latter. They haven’t been this bad in a long, long time. Dire things going on in West Lakes, and it doesn’t get any easier – the Eagles, Richmond, Geelong and Melbourne all feature in the near future.

14.Western Bulldogs
Last week: 14

Forget the loss – that was just about inevitable – but worry about the injuries. Easton Wood gone for 2018, while Jack Macrae is out for a while too. They’re in a fair bit of trouble on that front, and on the field as well.

15.Brisbane Lions
Last week: 15

Had the bye.

16.St Kilda
Last week: 17

They cannot become complacent. In my mind, they didn’t win – Gold Coast lost. I’m not saying they shouldn’t celebrate the victory, but rather don’t use it as leverage to ‘redeem’ their coach or ‘excuse’ the rounds gone past.

17.Carlton
Last week: 16

Had the b- wait a second, they played? They’re an authentically terrible football team at the moment. Just think about what could’ve happened if Freo kept their foot on the gas.

18.Gold Coast
Last week: 18

Oh, no. That last quarter will live in infamy for years.
