St Kilda’s come-from-behind two-point victory is no doubt the highlight of the round. Behind all day, the Saints hit the front with a minute left on the clock.

The last-minute hero was Jade Gresham, who had already kicked one goal. His two goals not only helped to win the match but also helped to propel him up the Saint’s top-100 goal-kickers list, passing on the way Mick Dwyer, Wells Eicke, Brad Gotch and Tony Brown and finishing equal with Jeff Moran.

The only other Saint within the top-100 goal-scorers to score a goal was Tim Membrey, who scored two, which took him ahead of Fred Phillips, born 113 years ago and a member of the Saints teams from 1924 to 1932.

Nicknamed ‘Flops’, Phillips was a tall ruckman or key defender, although he once kicked nine goals in a game. He won St Kilda’s best and fairest in 1930 and was appointed captain-coach of Hawthorn in 1933. Tragically he died before the start of the season aged 27. The cause of death was blood poisoning, believed to be due to the toxins in the dye of his new jumper entering his bloodstream via a cut in his elbow. He had been originally recruited from Scotch College.

Amongst the players, Jack Steven drew level with Jim O’Dea. O’Dea became infamous for a behind-the-play hit on Collingwood’s John Greening in 1972. As a result, Greening nearly died and O’Dea was suspended for ten weeks. Also, David Armitage, recalled to the team again, passed Gordon Dangerfield and drew level with two famous names at the club: Verdun Howell and Stuart Trott.

For their opponents, the shattered Gold Coast Suns, Matt Rosa, whose position on the West Coast Eagles list slipped with both games and goals, caught Seb Tape on the number of games played for the Suns. Jarrad Lyons past Nathan Bock in terms of games played for the Suns, while gun full forward Tom Lynch took his goal-kicking tally above 250 goals. He easily heads the all-time goal-kicking list at the club.

The late Saturday game was all about Hawthorn’s Shaun Burgoyne, who played his 350th game and joined Doug Hawkins on the all-time AFL game-players list in 15th place. Hawthorn didn’t let him down and scored a thumping win, restricting Adelaide to four goals.

As usual, Burgoyne played well and, on the Hawthorn list, passed Roy Simmonds. Known as ‘Billy’, Simmonds played the ukulele and won the club’s best and fairest in 1956. He was originally from Koondrook. Captain Jarryd Roughead moved into outright 11th position on the Hawks all-time game-players list, passing Peter Knights and now Melbourne player Jordan Lewis.

For the defeated Crows, Richard Douglas claimed the outright ninth position on the club’s games-played list, passing Michael Doughty. Doughty retired after playing 24 games (missing only one due to the birth of his child) in the 2012 season. He was regarded as a quiet achiever.

Josh Jenkins, by wearing the number four jumper and kicking one of Adelaide’s four goals, overtook St Kilda’s Darrel Baldock and became the ninth greatest goal scorer in this jumper number.
