The final game of Round 13 saw Richmond beat Geelong by 18 points and regain top position on the AFL ladder.

Their 16th successive win at the MCG was a difficult one. Only one point separating the two teams after three quarters. As usual, it was the brilliance of Dustin Martin and Jack Riewoldt that got them over the line.

Riewoldt scored two goals to take his career total at Richmond to 567 goals, 42 goals behind Michael Roach who sits fourth on Richmond’s all-time top 100 goalscorers list, and four goals behind Melbourne’s legendary Norm Smith who sits 39th on the AFL all-time top 100 goalscorers list.

Martin kicked just the one goal in the last quarter, but that took him to equal with former captain Roger Dean.

Dean, came up through the fourths and reached the senior side in 1957 before playing in the 1967 premiership side and then led the team to the 1969 premiership.

Before this weekend’s game, Dean was outright 20th on the Tigers all-time goal-scoring list. Now, ‘Dusty’ has joined some even more exclusive company.

The only other Tiger to make a move up the goals kicked list was Shaun Grigg whose one goal took him past Ron McDonald, Allan Edwards and Neville Crow.

He also tied Bryan Wood who represented the club with distinction between 1972 and 1982 before moving on to Essendon for another four years.

Also of note Daniel Rioli who kicked a goal in his first game for the club in 2018.

For Geelong, key forward Tom Hawkins was the main goalscorer, kicking three goals. While he still remains a long way behind Gary Ablett Sr and Doug Wade on the Cat’s goalkicking list, he did pass Sel Murray on the AFL top 100 goalkickers list.

Murray played most of his career with North Melbourne except for two years (1945 and 1946) and 50 goals at Richmond.

During his time at North Melbourne in 1937 to 1944 and six games in 1948, he scored 411 goals for the Kangaroos and still remains in the seventh position on that club’s goalkicking list.

Joel Selwood’s long bomb goal was one of two that he scored. The first was his 150th for the Cats.

He finished with 151 goals meaning he now has scored more goals for Geelong than legendary Bob ‘Woofa’ ‘The Geelong Flyer’ Davis who played for 11 years from 1948 to 1958.

Davis was considered the fastest man in the league during those years and loved performing in front of a crowd.

He was captain of the club from 1955 to 1958 and won the Best and Fairest in 1957. He played in two premierships and also coached Geelong to another one in 1963.

Gary Ablett also kicked one long-range goal and managed to improve his standing on the AFL all-time goalkickers list.

He is now equal with former Fitzroy player Mick Conlan in 97th position with 395 goals. Of those goals, 271 of which have been scored for Geelong.
