With the Gfinity Elite Series in full swing, we took some time to ask the six clubs a few questions about themselves, their history and their players.

First up, we have Melbourne Avant – one of two Melbourne sides in the competition and one of the first two teams announced for the Elite Series.

Tell us, briefly, about Avant Garde Gaming’s history? What have been some club highlights?
Avant as an organisation was established in 2013. The club has a rich history in Australian Esports, as one of the foundational clubs Avant has been involved in almost every game title in the region, from League of Legends to Counter-Strike.

Highlights include multiple overseas tournament qualifications including the SMITE World Cup 2016, as well as the establishment of the Avant Gaming house in 2017 and the recent opening of the Avant Gaming Sydney training facility in Surry Hills, Sydney.

How have your draftees reacted to the experience of being picked up by a professional esports team? How have they fit in with the pros?
Our draftees are enthusiastic about being involved in a league as big as Gfinity – a big opportunity for their careers in Esports. Especially so for our Street Fighter V players, who were entirely drafted from the Challenger Series.

The Elite Series is a significant change from smaller competitions they are used to playing in, and the players have really embraced the experience and taken the opportunity to showcase their talents and unique personalities every week.

Which of your players – professional or draftee – has the most interesting backstory? Does anyone have any bizarre pre-game rituals?
One player, RumoursofGhosts, has played fighting games for many years, mostly as a passion outside of his regular job as a tax lawyer.

The Elite Series has been a great opportunity for Rumours to play in front of a crowd on a much larger scale than he is used to or otherwise would be able to, and his passion and energy for the game really shows through his engaging banter and showmanship on stage.

Which game do you think you have the best chance in?
With one of the strongest rosters in Street Fighter V whose personalities gel so well, our best chance for the Elite Series is certainly in Street Fighter.

Why should Melbourne esports fans get behind your team? What makes you the team to pick?
The Avant Army never says die; with the passion and personalities that our players showcase, it is impossible to not be rooting for them. They really put it all on the line.

If you could add one more game to the Elite Series line-up, what would it be and why?
With the rate that FIFA is growing and the growing player base in the region, we believe FIFA would be a fantastic addition to the Elite Series that would fit the competition’s format quite well.
