The two middle games of Round 14 involved Hawthorn and Gold Coast down in Tasmania, and Brisbane and Greater Western Sydney up at the Gabba.

The two teams still in the hunt for the finals (Hawthorn and Greater Western Sydney) both scored comfortable wins and currently fill positions 9 and 10 on the ladder, although the Giants win will be soured by the fate of star forward Jeremy Cameron who is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after an altercation with Harris Andrews which left the Brisbane defender bloodied and concussed.

Ten Hawthorn players helped themselves to goals compared with only three Gold Coast players, and – as usual – many (seven) of those players are already part of the greatest 100 goalkickers the club has had. Jack Gunston kicked three goals and moved ahead of Gary Buckenara and into 12th position on the all-time goal kickers list at Hawthorn.

Number 10 on the list Luke Breust kicked two goals while #6 Jarryd Roughead only managed one and seems unlikely to score the 33 goals needed to equal Lance Franklins’ goalkicking feats at the club by season’s end.

The other seven goal kickers for Hawthorn on the day also managed only one goal each but, for some, it resulted in a move up the goal kicker’s ladder: Paul Puopolo’s goal took him past Daniel Chick. Chick was recruited from Western Australia by Hawthorn coach Ken Judge and during his seven years at the Hawks shared a Best and Fairest with Nick Holland and was the club’s leading goalkicker in his last year (2002), but he had to wait until he returned to WA to be part of a premiership team with West Coast Eagles.

Isaac Smith continued his consistent goal kicking efforts and moved up to join Jack Ryan who was born nearly 111 years ago and represented the club from 1929 until 1933. Evergreen Shaun Burgoyne now joins Bob Williams and Michael Osborne on the list, and Liam Shiels moves past Jade Rawlings and Colin Robertson to join Charlie Grummisch who was recruited from Kilcunda-Bass and played for the club in the 1970s.

The Suns’ three goal kickers were gun forward Tom Lynch (2), Peter Wright (2) and Alex Sexton who are all current members of the team’s top 10 goal scorers. Sexton is locked in a goal scoring battle with teammate Andrew Swallow and after this week holds a one-goal advantage and a top 10 spot on the list.

At the ‘Gabba, Eric Hipwood scored three goals for the Lions and moved into the top 30 all-time goal kickers for the club ahead of Jed Adcock, Daryl White and Pearce Hanley. Dayne Zorko scored one as did Dayne Beams and five others including Luke Hodge with his first since joining Brisbane at the start of the season.

Hodge still remains at #45 on the AFL all-time game players list but next game will equal Brisbane’s Marcus Ashcroft.

For the Giants, the wayward Jeremy Cameron kicked three goals, as did Jonathan Patton. Josh Kelly and ex-Bulldogs Captain Ryan Griffin kicked two goals each, while five other goal kickers scored one each to keep the club’s final hopes alive.
