New South Wales has been awarded an incredible penalty try in dramatic fashion, throwing Game 2 of State of Origin into disarray after Boyd Cordner was taken down off the ball 10 metres out from the tryline, giving the Blues their first lead of the contest.

Cordner joins elite company, becoming only the second player in Origin history alongside Mal Meninga in 1981 to be awarded a penalty try in this arena.

Trailing 10-6 after half an hour and the Blues pressing inside the attacking 20, James Maloney grubbered through into an empty in-goal area with Cordner in hot pursuit and no one in front of him.

The Roosters big man looked to be in for all money before Ben Hunt came across out of nowhere, knocking the much larger man into the turf as the home crowd and Blues players all went up appealing for anything to go their way.

Once the Bunker came into play, the decision was a quick one as replays showed Hunt change his line and drop the shoulder into Cordner who dropped like a sack of spuds, putting a final nail in the Queensland coffin.

A comfortable Maloney conversion from right in front gives the Blues the outright lead, holding on to a 12-10 scoreline after 31 minutes.
