An entertaining back-and-forth opening to State of Origin Game 2 has brought the first controversy of the game just eight minutes in after Queensland flier Dane Gagai was denied a spectacular corner finish on the right wing.

New South Wales were able to survive an early scare thanks to the returning Billy Slater on the left wing but it’s the opposite side of the field that had Blues fans sweating bullets in the opening exchanges.

Quick ball through the backline and an overlap out wide looked to open up the left edge defence of the home side, but a desperation cover tackle from Josh Addo-Carr threw a spanner in the works as Gagai planted the ball over the white line.

Controversy reigned when the Bunker came into play as the officials needed a split-screen view of two angles to make the call.

Fans were left confused as the two pieces of footage looked to be out of sync, leaving the decision up in the air with Gagai’s back leg sliding over the sideline almost simultaneously with the ball being planted.

The visitors were eventually denied the opening points with scores still locked nil-all after eight minutes.

Unfortunately for the winger he wasn’t able to convert his won try, leaving the scoreline at 4-0 after 13 minutes of Game 2.
