There are two race meetings in Australia on Monday, with programs set down for Scone and Mildura. With my Sunday tips proving profitable, here are my suggested bets for the afternoon.

Bet 1: Win – Scone Race 1, number 14: True Finesse
I’m really surprised she isn’t closer to favourite here. Rod Northam trains this filly, who had one trial a couple of weeks back here over 900 metres where she did a bit wrong in the straight, but I loved the way she strode when second. If Robert Thompson takes the ride, draws a good gate to get cover and a bunny to chase, she’s very likeable for mine.

Bet 2: Win – Scone Race 2, number four: Great Wings
Another on debut to be ridden by Robert Thompson, this one is trained by Allan Denham, and we know when he’s on the road, especially first up or on debut, he means business. This colt trialled at Wyong just under a fortnight back and looked pretty good to my eye in winning that trial in pretty solid time. It looks a thin maiden, so I’m confident he can get the job done.

Bet 3: Win – Scone Race 4, number four: Kulnura
This is his first since November, but I reckon if he runs up to the trials, he wins. David Atkins trains this very promising son of Choisir, who had a three-run prep to kick off the career in the spring, winning impressively at Muswellbrook with solid efforts before and after. He’s been ridden out in both trials leading in, but the good sign is there has been a response and he has attacked the line. He’ll do me as the best of the day.

Bet 4: Win – Mildura Race 1, number three: Patriot Day
I’ll take a gamble he’s ready. Son of Denman resuming for Beetroot Williams after a two-run spring prep, where he closed off well first up at Stawell before finishing midfield in a strong race at Geelong. It’s zero from four for the stable so far at Mildura the past 12 months, which is a concern, but this race has no depth, and could Yendall riding rather than the Weir horse be a lead?

Bet 5: Win – Mildura Race 7, number two: Fanciful Toff
It’s hard to find a good thing at Mldura, but I reckon this bloke is it. Ciaron Maher trains this lightly raced stayer who has had three career outings. He closed off well on a bog on Terang Cup Day behind a beauty in Lucky For All before toughing it out at Horsham. He then lumped 62 kilograms at Werribee and did an enormous job to run a game second. A two-kilogram claim for Poy certainly helps, and this race really has no depth.
