Australia’s World Cup campaign has come to an end, with Peru getting the better of them in Sochi by two goals.
Despite dominating much of the first half, the Socceroos couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the back of the net, with a lack of attacking options seemingly hurting them again.
Peru would grab one goal on the approach to halftime through Andre Carrillo, who hit a cracking volley from the edge of the box to put the Americas nation in front.
They added a second goal early in the second half with Paolo Guerrero scoring after a deflection from Mark Milligan.
From there, the energy completely went out of the game and Peru would hold on against some more attacking raids towards the end of the game.

The Socceroos will aim to rescue their World Cup campaign and sneak into the round of 16 when they take on the winless Peru in their final group game. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 12am – midnight (AEST).
Australia could have easily grabbed four points out of their first two games against France and Denmark, but instead, missed opportunities and a bit of bad luck has left them on one point and needing plenty to go right on the final matchday to progress to the round of 16.
The ‘Roos had France at one-all towards the back-end of the game after defending stoutly for the first 80 minutes, but were finally broken down by a Paul Pogba strike which just cleared the line off the crossbar, leaving Matt Ryan no chance of stopping it.
More impressive though was Australia’s ability to hit back after going down 1-0 early on against Denmark. Their attackers managed to control the game from that point forward, and while they were dominant, only scoring one goal will worry Bert Van Marwijk with changes likely to happen for the third game.
Striker Andrew Nabbout has injured his shoulder, while Robbie Kruse is also likely to be replaced in the starting XI after a sub-standard performance. Tim Cahill, Daniel Arzani and Jamie McLaren seem to be the likely replacements.
With the way the group ladder is, a draw will do nothing for the Socceroos. They must win and hope France beat Denmark to go through, with goal difference and, failing that, FIFA fair play points to then decide who will advance.
That said, Australia must attack from the first minute and get an early lead.
Easier said than done though. Peru has been pretty good in defence throughout the tournament, only letting in two goals across their 180 minutes. Unfortunately for them, they are yet to score, and their lack of control in midfield will make this another tough encounter for them.
Peru will be stout in defence again, with Pedro Gallese strong in front of goals. Still, they had 17 shots against Denmark and couldn’t convert, so with potentially less opportunities against a pressing Australia, the chance of them scoring here seems slim.
The Peruvians have nothing left to play for, but that in itself makes them dangerous as they try to leave Russia with at least a point to their name.
Prediction
Australia were really strong against Denmark, despite not pulling the points out of the fire. Desperation should inspire them to something more this time though, with Peru having nothing but pride left to play for.
