Canberra and the Wollongong Wolves are two of the names on the FFA’s eight-team short list for possible expansion sides, with the rest to be revealed later today.
It’s not clear just yet which six other teams will be on the shortlist, but a formal announcement is expected this afternoon.
The eight shortlisted teams will have two months to submit their final applications before an August 31 deadline.
The FFA is then scheduled to announce which two new teams will join the competition on October 31.
The Wolves are a former NSL club who competed in the competition for most of its history, culminating in winning two national championships in 1999-2000 and 2000-01. They also won the continental championship in 2001.
Club owners decided not to apply to join the A-League when it was formed in 2005, and the club nearly went out of existence during a financial crisis in 2009.
Canberra meanwhile is the only city currently to be represented in the W-League without also being represented in the A-League.

Brisbane City, Dandenong, Fremantle, Gold Coast, Ipswich, South East Melbourne, South Melbourne, Southern Sydney, Tasmania and West Adelaide are among the other potential areas for A-League expansion.
