The Western Bulldogs are staring down the possibility of mathematical elimination when they host the Geelong Cats on Friday night at Etihad Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:50pm AEST.

The Bulldogs simply put haven’t had a season befitting a side that won the premiership less than 24 months ago.

They’ve been playing a remarkably young team and coach Luke Beveridge has, in typical fashion, made some surprising decisions both at the selection table an in terms of where on the field he puts his charges.

Beveridge is known for being both unorthodox and brilliant, but to the frustrations of some fans it’s been more of the first and not as much of the second so far in 2018.

The end result is that they’ve got four wins to their name with nine matches left in the season and baring a Richmond 2014-esque run home to finish line, their season is dead.

They played one of their best performances of the year last week, coming within inches of taking down finals fancy North Melbourne – but a last-second stuff-up saw Beveridge peeling paint off the walls with an almighty post-match spray.

As for Geelong, they’re one of the sides in the league who look likely to make finals and may even be a serious chance still to finish in the top four.

It’s been thought for some time that the Tigers, Swans and Eagles are probably relatively secured there (though nothing is guaranteed), but the Cats are one of several teams in the mix for that last spot left open.

Percentage is likely to be crucial and the Cats can be proud to say that of the teams chasing fourth, they’ve got the best bar Melbourne.

A crunching win tonight over an opposition side that has often failed to hit the scoreboard this year could be seriously valuable as the season nears its pointy end.
