The final week of the Gfinity Elite Series’ regular season kicked off on Saturday, with plenty of positions on the CS:GO ladder yet to be locked in.
The day started off with what was billed as the match of the weekend. Sydney Roar took on Melbourne Avant in what looked to be a straightforward equation: win, and you’re in the finals.
Lose, and you’re out.
The Roar got off to a ripping start, but their 10-5 lead at the half collapsed in front of their eyes after a scintillating second-half effort saw the Melbourne boys run out 16-12 victors.
That punched Avant’s ticket to the playoffs next week, with the Roar’s only hope of sneaking into finals resting on the winless Brisbane Deceptors somehow defeating the top-four Perth Ground Zero.
From the very first pistol round, however, we knew we were in for a wacky affair. Brisbane started off with all of the intensity – leading 7-1 at one point.
You could’ve been forgiven for thinking the Deceptors were the ones battling for a playoff spot, although Perth finally found some form to take a 12-11 lead in the second half.
But it was all Brisbane from there, with the previously winless side claiming a borderline unfathomable 16-12 victory that saw Ground Zero – the only team to win their first two matches – sensationally bundled out of the finals.
The day then finished off with the battle for first place, as the white-hot Sydney Chiefs clashed with a scary, new-look Melbourne Order team.
We got a match befitting the occasion, with the Chiefs reeling in a huge early deficit to force the first overtime period of the Elite Series. They actually got out to a 17-15 lead, before Melbourne restored order to end up 19-17 victors.
Stirling Coates’ preview article tipped in favour of the Roar, Perth and Order, with the poor pundit only managing to go one of three.
Here’s how social media saw the day unfolding.

4:10pm: How about this comeback from Avant? They looked all at sea in the first half, but have stormed back to take a slender 13-12 lead with five rounds left.
Melbourne @AvantGaming sit just in the lead 12 – 13. The confidence of the Melbourne team building with each play but will it be enough to seal the match?
