There’s a stack of racing across Australia on Sunday with some good competitive races right across the respective meetings. Here are my suggested bets for the afternoon.

Bet 1: Win – Taree Race 2, number two: Sugarland Express
This looks like a race in two between this one and Spanish Steps. I think Sugarland Express is the one. He’s been around the mark for a while but the drop back to a country maiden last time at Port Macquarie proved to be the winning move and he bolted in. Looks to get a good run near the speed and will likely have a head start on Spanish Steps.

Bet 2: Win – Mudgee Race 4, number ten: Fertile Soil
Baker/Ryan on a wet track is fraught with danger, but it does look a nice race for the daughter of Snitzel, who debuted over 1000 metres at Goulburn where she was four wide with no cover throughout and stuck on well behind impressive winner Gundy. He form has been franked with Denesc bolting up on Friday at Moruya. She just needs to tick the wet track box.

Bet 3: Each-way – Sale Race 8, number four: Ripplebrook
I’m happy to have something each way on this gelding, who resumes on his home track for Sharyn Trolove. He does save his best for Sale, and after a brilliant opening prep his form has tapered off a bit. He’s been given a good spell and to my eye looks to have returned in good order if the trials are any guide. Jamie Mott booked, he can get good cover from the draw and launch late.

Bet 4: Win – Toowoomba Race 3, number three: Squall
This girl should be winning. She was the hard favourite when resuming at Ballina but I don’t think she was entirely happy on the bog when third to Anh Yeu Em. I think she will be much better on top of the ground, firmer footing at least, and on her home track she should take some beating in what does look quite a thin event.

Bet 5: Win – Naracoorte Race 1, number eight: Spudfest
This is the best bet of the day, but writing this on Friday, I’m not sure what price he is. I think he’s the winner barring bad luck. He’s had little to no luck in both runs this time in, the latest at Moe. He just got held up, like first up, and couldn’t build momentum, but he was good late. He’ll eat up the extra trip, the severe drop in depth and the three kilograms claim certainly helps. All over him.
