The Rockhampton Cup Carnival heats right up on Friday with Newmarket Day, but I think there are a couple of key chances back in New South Wales at Goulburn. Here are my suggested bets across the afternoon.

Bet 1: Win – Muswellbrook Race 4, number 12: Dayarma
A Muswellbrook wet track is a no go zone for me, but for a small interest I’ll have a peanut each way on this son of Grey Swallow. It looks a bludger of a race and I reckon his recent efforts haven’t been too bad without winning. He hasn’t looked like winning but has made ground late. He drops five kilograms from last run, a bigger track helps and he won’t mind some give in the track for his eight-year-old legs.

Each-way odds: $27/$7.50 (Sportsbet)

Bet 2: Win – Goulburn Race 2, number five: O’So Tempting
I think he’s one of three good things at Goulburn on Friday. He resumed here off a 13-week break where he was $1.85/ to 1.50 in betting and on the corner it looked no betting. He just couldn’t quite finish it off and ran out of puff late. I think he should come right on from that. I’m scared stiff of The Greatest, though. Meets O’So Tempting two kilograms from 12 February when winning here, and his two trials leading in have been quite good. He’s a saver just in case Tash Burleigh’s horse hasn’t come up.

Win odds: O’So Tempting, $3.90 (Sportsbet); The Greatest, $3.70 (Sportsbet)

Bet 3: Win – Goulburn Race 3, number four: Tiara Road
If she can run the 2100 metres out, she’ll be far too good for these. On the quick back up after running over the Moruya mile last Friday where she ran her race in patches, but I loved the way she closed off late behind a horse low flying at the moment in Receipt. It’s her home track now and up to 2100 metres. Hopefully the patient and in-form hands of Blake Shinn gets her home.

Win odds: $2.70 (Sportsbet)

Bet 4: Win – Goulburn Race 7, number two: Napoli
I’m the self-confessed number one ticket-holder of the fan club for this horse. I feel he’s got a very bright future but is still doing a bit wrong. He got the maiden win out of the way finally last start over 1300 metres when coming with a well-timed run from last to score. The part negative is that the time was five lengths slower than the other 1300-metre race on the same day, but with this horse I think it’s all upside and I’ll take a chance that’ll he measures up.

Win odds: $4.80 (Crownbet)

Bet 5: Win – Rockhampton Race 8, number three: Too Good To Refuse
If he runs up to his best, he just wins this. Niccanova does look the obvious choice, but 1300 metres first up at Rockhampton, especially if we get a track with give in it, will be a huge ask. Too Good To Refuse has class on his side and has fitness after resuming in the Hinkler and running on well late behind Savanna Amour. Tick over trial last week at Doomben was solid enough and there looks to be good speed here, plus he’ll be out wide on the best part of the track hopefully. I’m very keen to be in his corner.

Win odds: $40; Place odds: $50 (Tote)
