Behind the barriers: Five bets for Wednesday July 18

There is some pretty solid racing across Australia on Wednesday, and I think there are a couple at good odds at Warwick Farm. Here are my five plays for the afternoon.

Bet One – Each Way – Warwick Farm Race Two Number 14 Veranes
More than happy to have a slice of the double figures. Chris Waller trains this filly, who comes to NSW after resuming at Doomben where she was well backed but had no luck at all behind Malahide.

In Sydney now and her recent Rosehill trial looked quite good. Worried the inside gate is a potential negative, but I’m happy to find out at double figures.

Bet: $20 EW at $10/$3.15 (UBET)

Bet Two – Win – Warwick Farm Race Four Number 1 Island Missile
I think this is a potential trap race, similar to that with Mr Haussmann last week where I thought he was a moral but he didn’t do much. Island Missile looks a moral also and is at an enticing price.

Two runs back from a break have been very good, the latest at Randwick when working home with purpose behind Seahampton. He gets on top of the ground now and Shinn is riding so well at the moment.

Bet: $40 Win at $2.6 (Crownbet)

Bet Three – Win – Sandown Race Five Number 3 Greyworm
Keep in mind he’s nominated for Flemington, but if he runs here, he should be too good. Loved his debut win at Mornington before racing over 1400m at Caulfield three weeks ago where he got a bit lost around the bend but balanced up and kept surging late when a narrow third to Al Passem.

Should be better for the run and he has more upside than most here.

Bet: $100 Win at $2.05 (Sportsbet)

Bet Four – Each Way – Gold Coast Race Four Number 5 Elixir
I think he’s a great each way bet despite the poor draw. Formerly trained by Team Snowden where he had a stack of trials but is now with Les Kelly where he’s had the one trial, which saw him win over 900m at this track last Tuesday.

Not much speed on the map so if he jumps cleanly, I think he can get over, or at least be three wide, and prove hard to beat.

Bet: $15 Win/$25 Place at $6.5/$2.3 (Crownbet)

Bet Five – Win – Belmont Race Four Number 3 Electric Light
Probably would be against him if it was a Saturday race but it’s good placement by the Durrant team. Could easily throw her in a 3YO Saturday race but she’s just doing a bit too much wrong to measure up to that grade.

This is her level.

She hits a flat spot mid-race, and it can get ugly viewing, but once she puts her mind to it, she gets the job done. Won 2/2 and I think she can make it 3/3.

Bet: $40 Win (Tote)

Total spent: $260
