On Footy Classified this week, we saw one of the most fiery TV interviews of 2018, as Carlton list manager Stephen Silvagni sought to justify the club’s last three years of drafting.

Silvagni fired back at Essendon great Matthew Lloyd for picking up four Greater Western Sydney players in the 2015 trade period, which saw the Blues part with picks 28, 77, 95 and Geelong’s first rounder, which was given to Carlton in exchange for Lachie Henderson.

The Blues picked up defender Lachie Plowman, ruckman Andrew Phillips and fringe players Jed Lamb and Liam Sumner. Three of those four are still on the list, with Sumner being delisted at the end of 2016.

Lloyd also got stuck in over the club picking up former first-round draft pick Jarrod Pickett, with Silvagni firing back, saying, “On talent, and when he is fit – he’s a dangerous player. What we gave up for Pickett was a backend pick.”

Silvagni also fired back at Caroline Wilson’s comments over former CEO Stephen Trigg’s exit, Caro having written in The Age that Silvagni was one of chairman Mark LoGiudice “henchmen” in getting rid of Trigg.

Silvagni clarified his position at the club, saying he never attends board meetings, or player meetings during the season.

The list manager then said that Carlton are looking at going after an age group of 22-to-25-year-olds to fill up their talent pool, having blooded kids under the age of 21 in the last few weeks, having lost senior players such as Levi Casboult, Sam Docherty, Plowman, Andrew Phillips and Tom Williamson for the rest of the season.

Fringe players like Matt Shaw, Cam O’Shea and Andrew Mullett are getting a chance to prove their former clubs wrong – but they are not long-term prospects.

Silvagni now has the task of picking up mature, experienced bodies, and unfortunately – with Rory Sloane signed on for a further five years at Adelaide, Dylan Shiel mentioning to Triple M this past weekend he has no intention of leaving the Giants, and Andrew Gaff rumoured to be staying in Western Australia – Carlton need a miracle.

This trade period, the club must be more aggressive than ever before, and pick up players that will help them improve.

With phase four of the club’s rebuild to commence in October, it’ll be interesting to see what they trade away to gain what they need to prove the pundits wrong, and ultimately climb back up the ladder.
