This is not the strongest of race meetings across Australia on Thursday. However, hopefully, there are some winners to be found. Here are my five plays for the afternoon.

Bet One – Win – Gosford Race Seven – Number Three Huangshan
This is a tricky meeting but I think this bloke will take some beating. It was hard to ignore his effort at Newcastle last time when he was chasing hard and getting close to knocking off stablemate Shadal.

He’s fourth up now, so he should be hard, fit, and off the last start. I think the rise to 1900m will really suit him, and firmer footing will be a big tick.

Bet: $25 Win at $4.4 (Crownbet)

Bet Two – Win – Moree Race Three – Number Five Pat’s Nipper
Bludger of a meeting at Moree, but I think this is the pick of the bunch.

Three weeks between runs when racing over 1400m at Tamworth where he got a fair way back off the speed but finished off strongly to run a close up fourth to the in-form Smith.

I’m a fan of the way Josh Oliver is going about it at the moment as 1600m looks quite ideal.

Bet: $30 Win (Tote)

Bet Three – Win – Echuca Race Five – Number 11 Sergeant
If he runs straight, I think he’ll be too good for them despite taking on the older horses.

He debuted at Sale over 1200m where Willow had him up on speed before taking the lead shortly upon straightening but wanted to lay in.

It probably cost him the win in the end when a narrow second. Lane jumps on now and hopefully, he can straighten him out.

Bet: $45 Win (Tote)

Bet Four – Win – Gatton Race One – Number Five The Hussler
I don’t want to spend too much time on Gatton so let’s get a good thing out of the way and move on.

Kelly Schweida trains this bloke, who was well backed when resuming just under three weeks back at the Gold Coast where he was on speed.

He fought hard but just tired late in the straight. Firmer footing and a significant drop in depth the two big ticks, and the form out of that maiden has been quite good.

Bet: $40 Win (Tote)

Bet Five – Win – Northam Race Two – Number One Universal Warrior
The Williams/Pike combo is always lethal and I think it’ll continue via this gelding who resumes in a thin maiden.

He debuted at Bunbury back in January on Australia Day and had his chance. However, the run had merit when second.

She was a good break and the Belmont trial was good enough for mine.

Bet: $60 Win at $1.90 (Sportsbet)

Total Spend: $200
