Sydney racing this Saturday heads to Randwick for a nine-=race card, while at Doomben it’s Tatts Mile Day. Here are my five plays across the two meetings.

Bet 1: Each-way – Randwick Race 1, number four: The Tenor
I wouldn’t touch Plague Stone at the odds, so I’m having something each way on this bloke. He was well backed when debuting over 900 metres at Newcastle and was pretty bomb-proof in winning, leading throughout under Avdulla, and he did it without really being fully extended. Time was quicker than the other 900 metres on the day, which is a good sign, and he looks to have plenty of room for improvement.

Bet 2: Win – Randwick Race 3, number six: Ombudsman
This race has been decimated by scratchings, but he looks a good thing. A three-year-old trained by Chris Waller, who gave them a caning at this track and distance a fortnight back, confirming he is a 2400-metres horse given there were question marks leading in. Now that he has ticked the box, I think he can go right on with it and he should be winning.

Bet 3: Each-way – Randwick Race 7, number five: Sir Plush
This is one of the better each-way gambles on the card. I’m convinced he’s at his best when produced early on in a prep, as we saw last campaign. Having 1100 metres first up looks ideal, and he has been tuned up with a couple of trials, both seeing him not really extended. On a dry track at fast pace he looks well suited.

Bet 4: Win – Doomben Race 2, number three: Miss Quaintly
She looks like one of two good things at Doomben. David Vandyke trains this filly, who debuted with a pretty strong win over 1000 metres at the Sunny Coast before stepping up to the 1350 metres here on the bog, where she was wide throughout yet kept finding the line to run second to Soaring Heart. I reckon the mile will suit her, as will firmer footing.

Bet 5: Win – Doomben Race 7, number three: Winter Bride
Anything in black figures I’ll take. She raced three weeks back at the Sunny Coast where she looked a good thing on paper and ran right up to those expectations with a commanding performance. She seems to race even better at Doomben and is just weighted to win it. Miss Exfactor the only threat, but I think Winter Bride has her measure.
