Richmond defeated Collingwood by 28 points at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the much-anticipated clash between two premiership heavyweights.

We can say that with confidence now after the performance of the Pies. They were outstanding for three quarters, matched the Richmond pressure and perhaps even surpassed it at different stages.

What the final scoreline doesn’t indicate is the to and fro nature of the game throughout the first three quarters and the two injuries that left the Pies depleted on the bench.

While not an excuse, it did leave Collingwood fatigued late in the game and one can only wonder if the result would have been far closer with 22 fit men available in the final term.

In saying that, whilst not looking in top form, the Tigers were disciplined and clinical in the way they applied the torch to the Pies when they sensed weakness and fatigue.

Jack Riewoldt marked brilliantly inside fifty all afternoon, Alex Rance kept Jaidyn Stephenson under control for much of the day and Toby Nankervis was outstanding in the ruck.

Scott Pendlebury and Levi Greenwood were influential in the midfield with Trent Cotchin held below his usual numbers in the first three quarters.

Josh Thomas continued his wonderful season with four goals and the overall feeling in the Collingwood rooms will be one of pride.

There will be a sense of disappointment with the loss yet also a convincing realisation they can push the Tigers all the way.

The next time they meet could be deep in the finals and one thing is for certain: the Tigers will know they have a challenge on their hands, and will not treat Collingwood with anything but the utmost respect.
