There’s some really good racing set down for Sunday, with my main focus being at Sandown for Grand National Day. Here are my five plays for the afternoon.

Bet 1: Each-way – Muswellbrook Race 6, number ten: What Could Be
I think the double figures on offer is more than acceptable, and you’ll probably get better by jump time. He’s a proven city performer who hasn’t raced since 30 June at Newcastle when producing one of the runs of the day from the back behind Kotinos. He looks to have good speed here, so he’ll get his chance to run on and is a good fresh horse.

Bet 2: Win – Sandown Race 1, number two: Sea King
If it were a wet track, he’d be $1.01 to win. He’s dealing with a dry track, which is the concern, but he’s been a mighty jumper for a number of years now and should take some beating. He ran so bravely in the Mosstrooper but was no match for Wells, who has been scratched, which makes the task easier. This looks like a race between him and Monarch Chimes.

Win odds: $3.70 (Crownbet)

Bet 3: Win – Sandown Race 5, number one: Self Sense
Black figures will do me for a horse who probably should and will start odds-on. He’s the best hurdler we’ve got in Australia and there is talk he could well go to the iconic Cheltenham Festival next year. He spanked them two races back in the Kevin Lafferty before going back to the flat last Saturday and winning so impressively in the Gold Stayers. Clean jumping and he’ll be too good.

Win odds: $2.00 (William Hill)

Bet 4: Win – Sandown Race 6, number 13: Kentucky Diva
Potential and ability – she’s the best horse in this race, and if she turns up fit and well, I think she wins. I loved the way she toughed it out two back to win the maiden at Hawkesbury before racing at Warwick Farm, where she had no luck at all behind Follow Suit. The key to this girl is getting her clear air early and building the revs. If that eventuates, she wins.

Bet 5: Win – Devonport Race 5, number ten: Fontein Ali
Speedonova looks a moral in the first but is likely to be deep in the red. I’m hoping we get a reasonable price for this girl, who is bursting to win her maiden, and I think she gets her chance here. She ran over 1350 metres here last Sunday when she got a mile off them in the run, but you had to like the way she closed off late to run second. Her rise to the mile looks ideal, and she has upside and finds a winnable race.

Win bet: Tote
