There’s some really good racing set down for Monday, with the feature racing coming at Darwin for Darwin Cup Day. Here are my five plays for the afternoon.
Bet 1: Win – Darwin Race 1, number three: Evil Miss
This girl hasn’t raced since 6 June over 1100 metres here where she did a bit of work to be on speed, but that early burn didn’t matter to her as she careered away late and bolted in. Her form out of that race has been solid, Jason Maskiell steers, she’s a bomb when produced fresh – she’ll do me. Odds of $3-plus are acceptable. Anything shorter and I’d be steering clear.

Bet 2: Win – Darwin Race 4, number two: Jayeffkay
He had his first run at Darwin on 30 June over 1200 metres when sitting just off the speed out wide and finishing off nicely enough late when second to Beleaguer, a proven handy horse from South Australia. His form out of that race has been good; he’s been kept on ice for this and draws a lovely gate. He looks a near good thing.

Bet 3: Each-way – Darwin Race 9, number seven: Lieder
This is a great each way gamble in the Cup. He comes through the main lead-up, won by Senior Council, but I thought Lieder was one of the runs of the race. He had to make a long searching run from around the 800 to 900- metre mark, whereas the winner had the suck box seat sit and last say. Hopefully Jamie Kah can have him closer in the run. If that’s the case, clearly this is the horse to beat.
Each-way bet: Tote
Bet 4: Win – Forbes Race 4, number one: Good Verdict
If he can naturally improve from the resumption, I think he’ll take some beating here. He resumed over 1310 metres at Dubbo where he was wide throughout and had his chance to drop out but kept finding, surging and just missed out on the win. He should get a much better run in transit and is one of the better bets on Forbes Cup Day.

Bet 5: Win – Geelong Race 2, number 16: Star Creation
There were no prices up at the timing of writing this, but I’m hoping for black figures for what looks the good thing of the entire day. He just did that little bit of extra work on speed last time over the Echuca mile but did hit the front and looked home only to be nabbed late. Run of the race stuff from gate one and being by Reset, wet track no issue.
