The Western Bulldogs have caused an upset with a seven-point victory over finals-hopefuls the North Melbourne Kangaroos.

At Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, the contest was hot in the first term, before the Kangaroos kicked out to a 28-point margin at the main break.

In the third quarter, the Western Bulldogs fired up, kicking the first five goals and eight goals to two for the term, to end up in front at the final change.

It was a complete turnaround for the Bulldogs, who played smarter and worked harder to take the ball forward.

Inaccuracies made the final quarter difficult to watch for both team’s supporters, but at the final siren, it was the Bulldogs in front by seven points.

A great effort by the Western Bulldogs to get the win in Dale Morris’ 250th AFL game.

Lachie Hunter was prolific with 44 disposals, and had assistance from Caleb Daniel (40 disposals) and Jack Macrae (40 disposals, 8 clearances).

Marcus Bontempelli was also influential with 35 disposals and two goals, while Tory Dickson kicked three goals and also led Majak Daw away from the contest.

The Kangaroos didn’t look like a team on the verge of the eight in the second half, they were taken out of it by a team who smartened up and wanted the win more.

Ben Brown kicked four for North Melbourne, while Ben Cunnington (26 disposals, 12 contested) and Jed Anderson (20 disposals, 16 contested) worked hard, but they didn’t have enough contributors in the second half.

Bulldog Zaine Cordy headed to hospital at half-time with a right cheekbone concern – initially it looked like a head gash that could be fixed up, but he was taken to hospital with a suspected fracture.

Jy Simpkin hurt his ankle and Lachie Hunter his shoulder, though both played out the game.

Next up for North Melbourne is a trip to Adelaide to face the Crows on Sunday afternoon, while the Western Bulldogs will go for third win in a row against Carlton at Etihad Stadium, also on Sunday.

Final score
North Melbourne 12.13 (85)
Western Bulldogs 13.14 (92)
