There’s some really solid racing set down today, when my focus will be at Taree for their cup day. Here are my five plays for the afternoon.

Bet 1: Win – Taree Race 1, number 14: Unguarded
I thought she was the best of the day. Richard Freedman trains this filly, who does look as if she could be a staying sort of filly, so I wouldn’t put the pen through her as an Oaks horse. Her two runs in the Winter, both in strong two-year-old races in Sydney, were quite good, and she warmed to the task nicely late. She was good enough in a recent Warwick Farm trial. If Adkins can take advantage of the gate, she’ll win.

Win odds: $3.30 (TAB)

Bet 2: Win – Taree Race 2, number six: Ted’s Dream
This is the second of two good things at Taree and it comes in the second race. He ran out of condition first up at Coffs Harbour before going to Kempsey, where I was quite keen on his chances but he was bumped into Sunreel, who won like a very good thing at Newcastle on Thursday. That form reads very well for this, and third up he should be hard fit and ready to go.

Win odds: $2.80 (TAB)

Bet 3: Each-way – Taree Race 7, number ten: Allzin
He was perhaps flattered by a lightweight apprentice steering, but the trial win at Taree was very good to the eye. He sat last, peeled the widest on the turn and let down nicely to get the win. Graham Hoy doesn’t mind resuming this horse at a staying trip, and I could easily make a case for him and have something on at the double figures.

Each-way bet: Tote

Bet 4: Win – Ballarat Race 4, number six: Romelo
I’m keen on Romelo. This bloke has really transformed his career since joining Eric Musgrove, producing really good efforts on the flat. He was purchased with jumping in mind, and he made his debut last week at Warrnambool, where he looked pretty good for the most part and won impressively. I’m confident he can measure up, and the wet track is certainly no issue.

Bet 5: Win – Ballarat Race 6, number two: Sea King
The wet track is clearly an advantage for Sea King in what should be an epic edition of the Crisp. He was beaten fair and square by Wells two weeks ago in the Mosstrooper on a firm track, something he hates, before a gutsy effort in the Grand National. He was in the mix in this race last year but sold out at the second last. Steve Pateman is on and looks as if he’s been set for this race. I’m happy to be with him.

Win bet: Tote

All odds correct at time of writing.
