My 2018 All Australian team

By Tom Baulch / Roar Guru

Alex Rance looks set to captain a diverse All Australian team for the second consecutive year.

No team will dominate selections, as the competition has enjoyed another closely contested year, leading to many difficult decisions.

Starting with the backs, leaving out Jake Lloyd had to be done for another lockdown defender in Tom Stewart. Rory Laird and Lachie Whitfield were picked over Lloyd as the running half backs. Jeremy McGovern and Rance will lead the spine of the defenders as the two talls, as Tom Stewart plays as the third tall.

Whitfield’s elite foot skills and exceptional finish to the year has him picked ahead of Lloyd, as does Laird, who leads the defenders in possessions and intercept possessions in 2018.

Elliot Yeo will go back-to-back All Australian as he should be named on the half back flank, can play tall or small, and go through the midfield as he has done with the Eagles all season.

I couldn’t see Shannon Hurn in this mix, as Laird, Yeo and Whitfield are a step above him.

In the midfield, Dustin Martin has finished the year strongly to be named on the wing, along with Jack Macrae, with both ahead of Isaac Smith.

Josh Kelly just hasn’t played enough football, but Clayton Oliver was a no brainer – his season has once again been exceptional and uber consistent.

Andrew Gaff had a super season, but the uproar of him being named would just be too much for the media.

Brodie Grundy is the ruck man of the year, so he or Max Gawn will lead the rucks and both deserve to be in the team of the year. Tom Mitchell has had the most disposals in a season, inside ball, outside ball, tackles, he does it all, making him a simple selection.

Patrick Cripps, in a team that gets smashed every week, is a superstar and simply cannot miss out.

Lance Franklin, Jack Riewoldt and Ben Brown are the talls to lead, seeing Tom Hawkins miss out, as he just hasn’t been as consistent as the other three.

The smalls are led by Luke Breust, who was an easy pick. Robbie Gray misses out, with Devon Smith surely making his first team of the year as the premier tackle and pressure midfielder forward. Shaun Higgins may be on the bench or in the forward line, but there is no way he can miss out – he has been super this year.

The bench is led by Gawn, who just has to make this team. Two rucks must be picked and rewarded for their stellar seasons. Patrick Dangerfield is the best midfielder forward in the competition and somehow must find his way into the team, as he has come home firing with some huge games.

Nat Fyfe hasn’t played many games and that is understandable, however he could still finish on top of the leaderboard on Brownlow night.

Jack Gunston has been super for Hawthorn playing several different roles, who has been a major player in pushing Hawthorn’s premiership credentials.

Do you realise how ridiculous your statements are coming across. You are proving more and more that you don’t watch Hurn play. His disposal is his defining characteristic. If not for that, he wouldn’t even be getting a mention as an all-Australian. He doesn’t just take cheap kicks in the backline, he is used as the attacking weapon. His teammates try to get the ball in his hands as he regularly hits targets from 60m directly on the chest. That is why the people that watch him go wow he’s good, that’s his thing, and he is the benchmark of the competition. I’m not even debating him in the team over Whitfield, but the way your commenting on the way Hurn plays, is absolutely absurd. You may as well say Dusty can’t break a tackle and Jeremy Howe can’t take a speccie.

I think if you read my comments and Don's comments we say drop Rance and put Hurn in instead. Whitfield is not "so much better" than Hurn in his kicking. He gains more metres per game, one of those stats you so despise but his delivery by foot is good but not elite. The Eagles game is built on elite kicking skills so they they don't faff around with punch-ons,spoils and handballs. They need fewer disposals for their goals,(another stat) than any other team and it begins,if needed with the exceptional kicking of Shannon Hurn from half-back Bias cuts both ways of course and a Victorian one is no more valid than a West Australian one. Again I ask you, give me half a dozen games where Rance will pick up Brownlow votes.I can give you half a dozen for Hurn By the way, most of your team is inarguable but you've fallen down over this one.

Hurn will be first picked as captain. Everyone else will be after him. You'd certainly pick him ahead of Yeo who has barely played half vack. Let Yeo challenge Macrae etc in the mids. Fyfe starts ( and is the only challenger for captaincy). He is rivalled only by Mitchell as the best this year...with Mitchell a fair way behind.

still in the west don, watched a heap of his games, and i dont think this is getting through to anyone as much as i continue to say it. Hurn IS GOOD, HES HAD A FANTASTIC YEAR, I JUST do not know who to take out of the team to put him into it. There i put it in bold for everyone to see. I think Hurn is great hes a great player, I think Whitfield will be in the team this year as well though, and i do not think we are comparing apples with apples when we compare whitty and bunga. So, maybe for Yeo, or Stewart but i think those two have had pretty solid years as well. I do not know who else could come out of the team for Bunga. However i will say it again, Hurn is a great player and captain, good one on one and a great user, although in the games i have watched this year i think that whitfield has used the ball exceptionally well off the half back line. i have watched almost every GWS game this year and whitfield has been outstanding. Hurn has had a great year as well and should be in the team, i am just not sure how he fits in and who comes out. Have missed u Don, hope all is well.

Hurn will probably go down as the best kick in history.

Are you still in the West? How come you don't know how good Hurn is? Especially with his disposal.

Astbury and Grimes are fab players as well, id get them in, but as i keep saying i just have no idea about who to take out of the team for those richmond players, as no richmond player has been really standout except really for riewoldt, martin at times and rance just because he is rance.

Like I said i just didnt know who to take out for hurn! So youre saying Whitfield for Hurn? I agree, Hurn has had a great year, been awesome, just do not know who to take out for him unfortunately. I think Whitfield deserves his spot in the team 100%.

cheap kicks across the half backline should not count.
