The results are in! Yesterday we asked you to vote for The Roar’s 2018 All Australian team, and with the AFL’s team set to be selected tonight, it’s time to reveal our results.

The Roar’s 2018 All Australian team

B: Rory Laird, Jeremy McGovern, Shannon Hurn (C)
HB: Elliot Yeo, Alex Rance, Lachie Whitfield
C: Andrew Gaff, Clayton Oliver, Shaun Higgins
HF: Dustin Martin, Jack Riewoldt (VC), Robbie Gray
F: Luke Breust, Lance Franklin, Jordan De Goey
Fol: Max Gawn, Tom Mitchell, Patrick Cripps
Int: Brodie Grundy, Devon Smith, Patrick Dangerfield, Jack Macrae

Eight names in particular stood out among the votes this year: Laird, Cripps, Grundy, Breust, Mitchell, Gawn, Oliver and Riewoldt.

Those players were all picked in at least 80 per cent of the teams submitted, with Gawn and Riewoldt tied for the most unanimously picked.

Brodie Grundy also enjoyed huge support and left us with simply no choice but to select two ruckmen.

Probably the most surprising omissions were in the forward line, with Tom Hawkins, Josh Caddy and Ben Brown all missing out.

The voters opted for a more athletic and mobile set up, voting in Lance Franklin ahead of Hawkins or Brown, and Jordan De Goey over Caddy.

Devon Smith enjoyed strong support to secure a spot on the bench, and Shannon Hurn shapes as the obvious choice for captain of those selected.

Dayne Beams would pick up the ‘most unlucky’ award, receiving the most votes of any player not to make the final cut.

So long as we’re talking about All Australian teams, here’s mine also.

The midfield is always hard to pick and this year I found it harder than most. Stephen Coniglio, Steele Sidebottom and Devon Smith are all players I wanted to include, but couldn’t ultimately find room for.

I’ve gone for a more traditional forward line than what our readers voted in, opting for the dominance of Tom Hawkins and Ben Brown, while also giving a nod to Josh Caddy.

Will Hoskin-Elliott came into my thinking a lot too – personally, I’d have him ahead of De Goey in the pecking order based on this year’s form.

I’ve never been a fan of putting two rucks in the team and never will be, but there’s simply no denying either Gawn or Grundy a spot this year.

If you were lucky enough to have both on an AFL list then you would find a way to fit them both into your side, so I’m at peace with it.

In the absence of selecting an actual AFL captain in the side, I’ve popped the title on Shaun Higgins since I once had a dream about him captaining the Bulldogs, Jack Riewoldt getting the nod for vice.
