With both Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows failing to live up to 2018 expectations, they should start to be concerned their long-suffering fans may start to look elsewhere.

Here come Adelaide United, who have new owners.

Adelaide United you say? How will they affect memberships? AFL is a winter sport and the A-League is played in summer. Yes, but they all compete for your membership dollar.

The new owners at the Reds have already shown a more professional approach: they are listening to the fans, and membership prices are very affordable.

Adelaide United have a fresh new look on social media, more investment, and are increasing their involvement with local clubs and the community.

If that was not enough, T20 cricket is getting bigger, has a longer season, and the Adelaide Strikers were crowned champions last season. Not to mention that the Big Bash is a lot more affordable than AFL footy and if they do put prices up it’s probably justified, as the Strikers have performed on the park – unlike our two AFL sides.

Carlton have come out and said their 2018 members will not have to pay any extra for 2019 memberships to reward their loyalty. With the Adelaide Crows not winning a flag since 1998 and Port Adelaide only playing finals three times in the last 11 seasons, it’s about time the members of our AFL clubs were not taken for granted and start getting what they deserve.

Both have a loyal membership base, missing finals but still maintaining a spot in the top eight of the competition for memberships and average home attendances.

But that could all be about to change.

The Crows and Power would be foolish to increase membership prices after such disappointing seasons.
