How does one go about predicting the Brownlow Medal? Why ask an expert – when you could ask all of Twitter?

Sounds like a lot of effort to go to, sure. That’s what we’ve done the work for you.

Who does Twitter think is going to win the 2018 Brownlow Medal? We’ve gotten a hold of the data for Twitter’s most mentioned players in relation to tonight’s Brownlow count.

And if Twitter has got it right, then Dustin Martin at Richmond is set to become the first back-to-back Brownlow Medallist since Robert Harvey in 1997 and 1998.

While Martin’s season hasn’t been as good as his excellent 2017 effort, he’s still been one of the league’s best this year and could easily claim the medal.

Out to $9 in betting, Martin will is a fair way behind the bookmakers favourite, Tom Mitchell, who Twitter is predicting to come in second.

Mitchell’s had another prolific and consistent 2018 season, and after finishing third last year will head into this year’s count with a strong chance of going a bit better.

Joining them on the podium according to Twitter will be Carlton’s inspirational midfielder Patrick Cripps.

Playing as a lone hand in the midfield for so much of the season, Cripps has been nothing short of outstanding and this year earned his first All Australian finish.

Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn, who this year broke the record for most hitouts in a season, is Twitter’s tip to finish in fourth.

Gawn’s had a dominant year and stands a chance of becoming the first ruckman to win the Brownlow in more than a quarter of a century.

Rounding out the top five however is a bit of a smokie – Jackson Macrae of the Western Bulldogs.

Macrae shaped as a serious contender for the medal earlier in the season, but his chances of an overall win took a bit of a hit when he missed three games in the middle of the season.

However even with only 19 games to his name in season 2018, Macrae could still be a chance to snag the medal.
