Seventh heaven: Lowndes takes another Bathurst win

By Scott Pryde / Expert

Craig Lowndes has added to his already immense legacy by taking a seventh Bathurst 1000 win at Mount Panorama on Sunday.

In his final full-time season after announcing he would retire from Supercars after 2018, Lowndes and co-driver Steven Richards put their hassles over the weekend behind them to cruise to victory during the last 15 laps.

David Reynolds and Luke Youlden were the fastest car all day and held the lead heading into the final 30 laps, but it wouldn’t last.

Having to do a triple-stint at the end of the day as all the main drivers did thanks to the way strategy played out, Reynolds suffered cramps in his left leg and not only got passed, but then copped a black flag and would end up missing the top ten as Youlden finished the race.

Scott Pye, alongside Warren Luff finished in second place for the second year running, while Scott McLaughlin and Alexandre Premat rounded out the podium.

Lowndes is likely to return to the mountain and other endurance events during 2019 and beyond as a co-driver.

Agreed. Fairy-tale finish for Lowndes but otherwise a forgettable race. As soon as they asked Reynolds if he could continue and he said 'I don't know' then they should have pulled him out. It appeared that Erebus were taking medical advice from the David's personal trainer rather than a doctor. I'm not sure of the protocol involved, but the Supercars head medical officer should have probably step in at some point earlier.

Wow..Lowndes gets the 'fairytale' finish! Gobsmacked when the commentary team began speaking about Reynold's problems with dehydration, cramp, fatigue...and questioned his mental state (due to the fatigue...) yet the race managers made the decision to keep him in the car. Don't know who decided they could "fix" his condition by re-hydrating him at the pit-stop....once cramps etc set in and one's decision making is affected, it takes more than a quick drink to overcome the acute physiological problems. Big mistake by Erebus Racing...Youlden may not have held off Lowdes (the #9 was the fastest car...), but Reynolds was 'shot"...
