Cross-town rivals Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers met each other in the semi-final of the FFA Cup on Saturday night in Penrith.

This was the first time the two teams had met each other in a domestic cup. Being a derby it was sure to be a thriller.

Both teams fielded fairly strong sides as Sydney looked to make the final for the third year in a row whilst the Wanderers were on a quest to make their first cup final. Markus Babbel’s men started the game very strongly, with marquee striker Oriol Riera having a chance early on in the game but was denied by former Wanderers stopper Andrew Redmayne.

Another chance came for Western Sydney soon after but was blocked by Rhyan Grant. Sydney were under pressure from the Wanderers who looked like the dominant side from the get go, Redmayne pulling off some important saves to keep the boys in blue in this game.

The first half ended 0-0 and Sydney quickly took control of the game in the second half with Trent Buhagiar scoring the first goal of the game to put Sydney ahead by tapping the ball past Nizic.

Cue Sydney supporters going mental. Wanderers seemed to drop off the pace a bit in the second half which Sydney took advantage of when marquee signing Siem De Jong curled in a free kick to double the Sky Blues’ lead.

Sydney then finished off their bitter rivals when Adam Le Fondre smashed a penalty into the back of the net and then did a knee slide in front of The Cove in celebration.

What was expected to be a tough contest between two bitter rivals turned out to be another flogging from the east side of Sydney as the Wanderers were unable to maintain their strong start.

Sydney will now look to the final where they will play Adelaide and look to defend their trophy. Will Sydney go back to back? Or will Adelaide get their revenge and claim their second FFA Cup? Tune into the final on the 30th of October as Adelaide host the reigning champions.
