The Rocket League qualifiers were full of upsets

Throwdown Esports Rocket League OCE Championship has had its last weekend of league play, which means the best four teams have been decided and they’ll go on to play in the finals this Sunday.

These final qualifiers had some upsets and unexpected victories along the way.

Playing first was Avant Gaming and Chiefs ESC and to be fair the results of this one weren’t too much of a shock. Avant haven’t had the best time of it in league play and losing this match to Chiefs put them last on the ladder. They managed to steal one point over the course of the games but ended up being decidedly defeated, as Chiefs’ superior strength handed them a 3-0 victory.

Chiefs were up again but this time facing Tainted Minds, a team who hadn’t lost a match all season. Both of these teams have been incredibly strong and the traded wins back and forth throughout the games. It’s hard to say if maybe their previous match had worn them out but by the end, Tainted Minds were all over Chiefs, bringing it to a Game 5 and then taking out ultimate victory.

The upsets were set to continue though, as Order – who don’t have the most consistent showing on the field – got the better of Tainted Minds.

Tainted Minds seemed a little unsure after their previous win, but it was actually just the sheer skill of Order which showed them up. Games were close, with the first two going to Order, and Tainted positioned to make a come back in Game 3, but Order weren’t having any of it and slammed them down for the final game, taking out a surprising 3-1 scoreline.

Order then broke the second-game curse by defeating Legacy after their handy win over Tainted Minds. They lost their first bout to Legacy, positioning many to think their previous victory was a one-trick win, but they fought it back to take out the next three games. Even Dumbo, who’s usually known for his defensive play, showed impressive scoring abilities.

This win brought the team least likely to make the final four into the finals.

Unfortunately for Legacy, that previous loss put them out of the finals and clearly rattled the team. With morale low, they practically handed the next lot of games to Ground Zero Gaming, who while also not having a shot at the final slot, had a bit more time to comprehend this. Ground Zero came in looking to prove themselves enough to take out sixth spot, whereas Legacy just didn’t have anything left to give.

The final matchup was Justice Esports up against SYF Gaming and everything was on the line. Order taking out both of their games meant this match was the last chance for either of these teams to make it to the final.

Justice were playing at a disadvantage, having to use one of their substitutes, Smiths, after Whiss broke his wrist several days prior. That being said, Smiths played wonderfully to help his team get on top of SYF. They almost did it too, with Games 3 and 4 turning the tides, but in the end, SYF brought back their strong play from the first rounds to get their spot in the finals.

The prize pool for the final oceanic competition sits at $US50,000, so you can see why these games were so hard-fought, but that’s not all that’s on the line. Of course, with any game, there’s scouting opportunities and pride on the line, but two of the top teams will be headed to the international bout against victorious teams in North America and Europe.

This competition will see the top-ten teams compete in the Rocket League Champion Series World Championship for a share in $US 1 million in front of a live audience.

To find out who of Chiefs, Tainted Minds, Syf, and the previously-thought-to-be-underdogs Order makes it to the international games, tune in this weekend.
