There wasn’t much movement on Monday and with just two days now remaining in the 2018 AFL trade period, plenty is left to be done.

Two of the biggest names on the agenda at the moment are Dayne Beams and Dylan Shiel and while neither found a new home today, there was talk about both.

Beams, it has become clear, does want to come back to Victoria and play for Collingwood, though his manager has said he’ll happily stay out his contract if Brisbane don’t get a good enough offer.

Today it was reported that Collingwood have made their initial offer and that is pick 18 and their future 2019 second-round pick in exchange for Beams. The Lions are said to have knocked the offer back.

It’s difficult to see a deal being done here, if Beams’ willingness to stay with the Lions is genuine. He is simply worth significantly more to them than Collingwood can afford to pay.

The Magpies’ position is hampered further by the fact that they’ll need to match bids for both Isaac Quaynor and Will Kelly in this year’s draft.

Pick 18 likely would have already been earmarked for matching a bid for Quaynor, expected to come in the teens, and if they trade it away they may be forced to go into deficit.

Collingwood’s next pick in the order isn’t until No.51.

As for Dylan Shiel, it has been reported that GWS are asking Essendon for their first round picks this year and next, a price which so far Essendon are unwilling to pay.

The Dons hold pick 9 in this year’s draft and given GWS’ abundant salary cap issues, could approach negotiations with a level of confidence that the Giants need this deal to get done more than they do.

Shiel was not the only Giant to attract an offer on Monday with talk that Fremantle have offered up pick 11 to secure Rory Lobb from GWS, but want some currency coming back the other way.

The Dockers reportedly want to secure Lobb and a quality draft pick in return for pick 11. The Giants currently hold picks 14, 25 and 43 as their first three selections in the draft.

Perhaps the other interesting tidbit of Monday were some comments made by Port Adelaide’s Jason Cripps on radio, warning Gold Coast that if they draft young South Australian stars, the Power will pursue them.

“If Lukosius and Rankine end up going to Gold Coast … we’re probably pretty happy to try to get them back in a few years’ time,” said Cripps.

“It’s interesting because then it just becomes a two-horse race between us and the Crows, as opposed to a Victorian kid that wants to come back home whose potentially got ten options.”

Gold Coast currently hold picks 2 and 3 in this year’s draft and have been heavily linked to Jack Lukosius at pick 2, and could look to pair him with Izak Rankine or Conor Rozee at pick 3.

Of course, one of Gold Coast’s chief concerns with any potential recruit to the club will be their willingness to commit to the club longterm, given the Suns’ noted retention issues so far in their history.

That Port Adelaide – and Adelaide too, presumably – would already have an eye towards poaching these players back from the Suns does not come as a surprise even remotely. That they would admit to as much before they even drafted perhaps does.

Only one trade deal was ultimately finalised on Monday – Sam Lloyd moving from the Richmond Tigers to the Western Bulldogs, in exchange for pick 64.

It was also reported on Monday that Gold Coast are on the verge of acquiring former Fremantle player Sam Collins through the last of their three mature-age access signings.

Collins was delisted by the Dockers at the end of 2017, but returned to Victoria and had an outstanding season in the VFL this year playing for Werribee.
