Some excellent racing has been assembled for Wednesday, with Caulfield the main focus for Blue Sapphire Day. Here are my five plays for the afternoon.

Bet 1: Win – Randwick Race 1, number four: Ritmico
He opened at $10 and I’m not surprised he has firmed. His debut win at Newcastle was outstanding given he was only fully clear for about 120 metres and savaged the line, with the runner-up and third horse winning subsequently. He looks a potential Carbine Club horse, but he would want to be winning tomorrow to warrant the trip south.

Bet: $30 win at $8 (Sportsbet)

Bet 2: Each-way – Caulfield Race 1, number six: Opposition
After the trip away, getting back to Melbourne could spark him into action. Forget his run in the Metropolitan last time given the tempo was stop-start and he was out the back, seemingly with no hope. There’s a severe drop in depth this time around and he has run well in Melbourne before. I think you’ll get better come post time.

Bet: $30 each-way (Tote)

Bet 3: Win – Caulfield Race 3, number seven: Fifty Stars
I like him, but at the moment he’s short enough. He’s a very promising galloper for Darren Weir that resumed in a hot open handicap on Benalla Cup Day, where his performance was absolutely outstanding after doing work in the run, though he was beaten by Sheriff John Stone. If that run hasn’t busted him, I think he’ll take care of these and go on to better things. The current odds are too short, though.

Bet: $50 win (Tote)

Bet 4: Win – Caulfield Race 4, number two: Take It Intern
I Like him a lot here. He made his Australian debut over 1400 metres here, where he was somewhat run off his legs early but balanced. Then, 250 metres out, he was there to win but just ran out of puff late when fourth to Cliff’s Edge. Up to 1700 metres with fitness under the belt looks an ideal recipe, and this field clearly has not as much depth. I’m hoping he can get to $4-plus.

Bet: $30 win (Tote)

Bet 5: Win – Caulfield Race 7, number three: Trekking
I think he’s the safe option. He is just a beauty for James Cummings, with the horse really turning the corner since being gelded. He was a strong winner of the Testa Rossa at this track and distance, and despite getting held up early, he finished best and won impressively. I think he can continue the picket fence.

Bet: $30 win (Tote)
