Last season, Western Sydney finished seventh. They did well in their attack, but they could have improved in the midfield and the defence.

In the offseason, Western Sydney lost seven players, defenders Jack Clisby, Jonathan Asprotamitis and Michael Thwaite, midfielders Steve Lustica and Kearyn Baccus, and attackers Chris Ikonomidis, Brendon Santalab and Alvaro Cejudo.

They have replaced these players by signing defenders Patrick Ziegler from FC Kaiserslautern in Germany, Ruon Tongyik from Melbourne City and Tarek Elrich from Adelaide United. Midfielder Jordan O’Doherty arrives from Adelaide, and Alexander Baumjohann comes from Brazil. Melbourne City attacking duo of Nick Fitzgerald and Bruce Kamau both signed for the club.

Last season’s position
7th, 38 goals scored, 47 goals conceded

Finals Series

FFA Cup
Semi-finals in 2017, semi-finals in 2018

Strengths and weaknesses
Markus Babbel has improved the morale of the players in the offseason and Baumjohann is a fantastic signing if he can stay fit. The attack is rebooted as well and key players could go back to their best, such as Roly Bonevacia and recent signings Nick Fitzgerald and Bruce Kamau.

Defence and discipline was an issue for the Wanderers last season, with Western Sydney the dirtiest side of last season, but a side thast also conceded 47 goals. Keanu Baccus, in particular, was sent off twice last season in important moments as well.

Transfer window grade: Indifferent
Lost eight, gained eight. The quality of this Western Sydney Wanderers side is similar, however, a few players should lift this season.
