The Australian one-day international team will be without Shaun Marsh for the opening match of the home summer against South Africa, after the left-hander was revealed to need “minor surgery”.

Cricket Australia have confirmed Marsh has suffered an “abscess in his buttock region”.

It is unclear at this stage when the 35-year-old is expected to return to the national team.

Marsh’s Western Australian teammate D’Arcy Short has been named as his replacement in the side for the series opener.

Though Marsh’s spot in the Test team has been under intense scrutiny following a lean patch overseas, Marsh was in fine form in his most recent ODI series, smashing two centuries in England.

Upon returning from Australia’s 1-0 loss to Pakistan in the UAE, Marsh struck 80 and 98 for WA in their Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania.
