With Shaun Marsh battling injuries, Australia have made the decision to add Ben McDermott to their one-day squad.

Currently one-nil down after a big loss to South Africa in Perth on Sunday in the first match of the series, McDermott will come into the squad as cover for Marsh, should he fail to recover in time for the second match in Adelaide on Friday.

Marsh was ruled out of the first match following an ‘abscess of the buttock region,’ which is said to have required a minor surgery.

In his place, D’Arcy Short played the series opener, which Australia went on to lose by six wickets after being knocked over for 152 with the bat.

It would be seen as unlikely that McDermott will play the second match of the series, given Marsh may be back and Short was picked in the squad before him.

The Queensland-born batsman, who also can carry the gloves, is currently playing for Tasmania, however, he has been left out of the Sheffield Shield side during the first couple of matches this season.

McDermott has made a name for himself in the shorter forms of the game though, with some excellent play for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League and Tasmania in one-day cricket. He currently has an average of 50 in List A cricket with two centuries in 14 matches to his name.
