Pohutukawa has won Race 6 at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day, taking out the Jim Beam Black Stakes ahead of Madam Rouge and Into the Abyss.

The 1400-metre race got off to a somewhat slow start, before Notation set the early pace, going into the lead ahead of Honeysuckle Choice and I’m So Sweet.

The field stayed reasonably compressed as the race picked up pace, with Notation getting onto the rail around the turn to lead away with Honeysuckle Choice stuck out wide. Into the Abyss opened up on a good run, but ended up very wide and unable to come over the top, having gone for home far too early.

Being wide didn’t stop Pohutukawa though, who put the hammer down through the final couple of hundred metres on what was a sensational run through the pack to edge out the similarly fast-finishing Madam Rouge who was on the inside.
