If you’re having a bet on the 2018 Melbourne Cup, there is every chance you had a punt on one of the exotic bet options at one point or another. Here, we give you the answers to who won the exacta and first four.

The Cup saw horse number 23, Cross Counter, come from the clouds to take victory. Having spent most of the race at the back of the pack, the horse came racing around the outside to edge out Marmelo and A Prince of Arran.

Exacta

The exacta is the technical betting term for picking the first two horses over the line in exact order.

In the 2018 edition of the Cup, it was Cross Counter (number 23) and Marmelo (number 9) who you would have needed to get the cash.

First four

The first four, on the other hand, as the name might suggest, is the technical betting term given to the first four horses over the finish line at the end of the 3,200-metre gallop around Flemington.

The first four is a boxed idea, with the odds going down and expenditure going up as you add more horses to your betting form.

You would have needed Cross Counter (number 23), Marmelo (number 9), A Prince of Arran (number 17) and Finche (number 13) somewhere within your ticket to get amongst the winnings.

Many of the favourites for this year’s Melbourne Cup came away with nothing, ending well down the field, which has thrown a spanner amongst the works for punters who had money on names like Avilius, Best Solution, Magic Circle and CliffsofMoher.
