The 2018 Melbourne Cup has been run and won, with Cross Counter taking out the win after an outstanding finish to the race.

Cross Counter came from the clouds to take home the $4 million winners’ purse in Australia’s richest race, leaving it until the last second to beat Marmelo and A Prince of Arran at the back-end of the race.

The Godolphin entry, ridden by Keirin McEvoy was a long way back, second to last with just 800 metres to go, but timed the run to perfection to mow down the field and take home the Cup.

After a day of uncertainty due to the weather, things would eventually brighten up, with the sun out and shining by the time 3pm (AEDT) rolled around.

While the track had worsened to a heavy 8 at one point in the lead-up, it was moved back to a soft 6 for the race, not benefiting either the wet-track or dry-track specialist, creating a quicker sort of race than might have been expected in the hours before it got underway.

Cross Counter spent most of the race at the back of the field, going past the post for the first time in last spot.

For McEvoy, it’s his third Melbourne Cup, having ridden Almandin to victory in 2016 and Brew during the 2000 edition.

Cross Counter is trained by Charlie Appleby, who becomes a first-time Melbourne Cup winner with the victory. Appbleby has trained horses for some big winds overseas, including the Prix de l’Opéra earlier this year in France, but has never broken through before today for Australia’s biggest race.
