The 2018 Melbourne Cup is over and punters are racing to find the answer to the crucial question: who came fourth?
On a day marked by miserable weather, poor track conditions and terrible fashion choices, the world held its breath as the odds tipped and turned in the lead-up to 3pm.
Indeed, a muggy morning punctuated by rain caused huge fluctuations in race odds and headaches for betting companies and punters alike, who scrambled to decide a favourite before the gates sprang open.
The race, which was predictably slow on account of the conditions, came down to the wire.
In the end, it was Finche who finished fourth in the 2018 Melbourne Cup. Cross Counter was first to cross the line, followed by Marmelo and A Prince of Arran in second and third respectively.
The result is a disaster for any punter who bet on Finche to win, place or each-way in the race that stops a nation, while those who put money down on the first four will need to have picked this horse to have any chance of winning.
Check out the winning trifecta and quinella for the 2018 Melbourne Cup to see if your bets came up the goods, or check the finishing order of the first four below.
First: Cross Counter
Second: Marmelo
Third: A Prince of ARran
Fourth: Finche
Of the $7.3 million winnings up for grabs at the event, fourth place earns a handsome $250,000 prize. While it’s shy of the $4 million in the pockets of the winners, Finche’s team can’t be too unhappy with their prize.
