Always a question for those on the Melbourne Cup sweep, Red Cardinal is the official last-placed finisher in the 2018 edition of Australia’s most famous race.

While The Cliffsofmoher pulled up lame on the first lap, the number two entry, who was one of the early favourites for the race never got to the finish line, meaning the official last finisher is Red Cardinal, who finished in 23rd position.

Red Cardinal showed some pace early, but was quickly blown out the back of the field and struggled to hang onto the pace of the leaders, ending a distant length behind the leaders.

While Red Cardinal wasn’t among the pre-race favourites, the horse who was second-last past the post in the 3,200-metre race was Avilius, who was expected by many to be competing for the cup.

Eventually winner Cross Counter rode most of the race at the back of the field with Avilius, but the latter simply didn’t have a turn of pace to mow down the field like the number 23 horse did.

Red Cardinal was ridden by Damien Oliver and trained by Darren Weir.
